Department:  Building Inspection
Compensation:  $25.35 per hour DOE
Hours:  Minimum of 40 hours per week

Position Objectives:
Performs a variety of duties involved in investigation and enforcement to ensure compliance with the municipal codes, ordinance resolutions, safety standards and adopted building codes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Review, interpret, and approve plans, maps, blueprints, site layouts, specifications, construction methods, and architectural and engineering plans to ensure compliance with legal requirements, safety regulations, and building codes.

Inspects all permitted residential, commercial, and industrial construction work to determine its conformity to adopted building codes and City zoning ordinances.

Investigates complaints regarding unauthorized or unsafe building use or construction, determines appropriate action, and follows through for compliance.

Issue violation notices and stop-work orders, conferring with owners, violators, and authorities to explain regulations and recommend rectifications.

Issue certificate of occupancy upon completion of projects and final review.

Assess the structural quality, general safety, and potential risk of the building or project in question.

Conduct preliminary building damage assessment inspections.

Works with the Code Enforcement, Public Works Department and City Administrator to ensure coordinated effort with code enforcement.

Coordinate the implementation of and compliance with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements.

Minimum Requirements:
Knowledge Of:

  • Provisions of Titles I, II and III of the ADA
  • Thorough knowledge of construction, equipment and workstation modifications which may be employed to provide accessibility and reasonable accommodation to employees and the public
  • Have a working understanding of the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC).
  • Practices and activities covered by employment nondiscrimination requirements for ADA

Strong communication skills to unify ADA efforts among administrative staff and to reach out to patrons with disabilities

Desirable Training and Experience:
Education and/or Experience:

  • High school graduate or possess a GED certificate.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in building inspection, or construction.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must maintain a valid Driver’s License.
